THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NEEDLE PRESSING AND EMULSION PRESSING TECHNIQUES
In printing techniques, needle pressing and emulsion printing have distinct characteristics but are often confused.
The basic information about needle pressing techniques and emulsion printing techniques – 2 technologies are very popular in printing:
What is needle pressing
The needle pressing technique is to use pressure along with the temperature to press a layer of metal onto the surface of the object (leather, paper, cardboard ...). To perform this technique requires molds for pressing, the most commonly used are zinc molds and copper molds.
Each type of mold has different characteristics and advantages. If zinc molds are used more widely because of economic and convenient, copper molds are high cost but the quality of the needle layer is pressed out beautifully, with higher quality, high accuracy and longer life.
There are many types of needle pressing such as:
- Force the entire content (including text, images, or both text and images),
- Espable/submerged
- UV coating
- Extra 3D compensation
What is emulsion printing?
Emulsion printing is a technique performed after printing. No need to use molds such as needle presses, emulsion printing only need emulsion inks and printers, such as offset printing a thin layer of metal (aluminum film) to create the colors closest to the requirements. These colors are often used for printing emulsion such as gold, silver, purple, white, blue.
How are needle pressing and emulsion printing different?
As modern techniques that the printing industry is still using today, needle pressing and emulsion printing have a superficial appearance that is confusing to some non-professionals because they all produce reflective colors. However, they have fundamentally different characteristics:
| Needle pressing | Emulsion printing |
History of birth | Born first | Born later |
Machinery and materials used | - Thermal benz machine - Raw materials are mainly emulsion color | - No need for thermal benz machine - Ingredients using UV color |
Quality | - Better product quality. – Lines and needle presses with moderate depth, high accuracy, sharper., look more professional and classy. - Higher durability – True colors, more luxurious and beautiful and evenly colored. – Less peeling due to higher adhesion of needle pressing. | - The quality is not as high as pressing the needle. – The metal layer of emulsion printing is easier to peel because the adhesion is not high. |
Print time | Longer: Because pressing the needle needs to make molding. In order for the printing to be accurate, the mold also needs to be tried before printing --> suitable for quality printing needs, which does not require urgent timing. | Faster: because there is no need for molding, just the emulsion printer and emulsion ink --> suitable for the needs of fast printing, folding printing of customers. |

Some applications of needle pressing and emulsion printing techniques
Products suitable for needle pressing techniques are often less detailed or have special details to highlight. Products with simple design combined with needle pressing will create accents and attract more viewer's eyes and focus. In addition, products in small or moderate quantities are also suitable for this type of needle pressing technology.
- Name card: Small size, not only suitable for needle pressing technology but also bring a professional name card for users.
- Wedding invitation: is one of the products using the most needle pressing technology, the motifs with different wedding invitation designs create a different style while ensuring luxury and class. In addition, combining needle pressing and stamping, immersing also creates a style that can not be mixed.
- Menu cover: Some menu covers with needle press detail make an initial impression for viewers, deciding the mood, enjoy and satisfaction of customers for the service that the store / shop brings.
- Catalogue: Some pages in the catalogue are also often pressed with a few details to impress or emphasize information.
Products suitable for mammography are often in large quantities and do not require strict luxury but focus only on highlighting the product as well as good cost.
